Painting Instruction Course 1 — Four Evening Classes

Dates: March-22,29 and April-12,19. Time: 6:30-8:30 PM. 

The Fundamentals. An introduction to the visual language of art. This 4-class course will cover the essential building blocks by which all fine art drawing and painting is based upon.

Class-1. Understanding the fundamental principles of form. You'll learn the (four) building blocks required for successful drawing and painting. (how to see and how to put down what you see). 20-min demonstration and lecture.

You'll draw and/or paint in B&W applying the principles learned. I will spend time with each of you and coach you as you work. 

Materials: • Sketchbook bristol paper 16x20 • Charcoal sticks, or soft lead pencils (3B,4B,6B) preferred. Black and white paint option is okay.

Class-2. Beginning painting using a limited palette. 20-min demonstration and lecture. You'll practice painting a still life set up during class. I will spend time with each of you to further coach you as you work. 

Materials: • Canvas pad. • Oil paint colors: Mars Black, Titanium White, Cad Red Light, Cad Yellow light or med. • Odorless mineral spirits, or comparable. (Gamblin Gamasol is great). • A basic set of brushes. Rounds, flats or filberts, your preference. In these sizes no. 4, 6, 8. A paper palette or palette box.

Class-3. Expanding on classes 1-2, we'll gain an understanding of how color, value and temperature are used to give paintings life, depth and atmosphere. 20-min demonstration and lecture. You'll practice painting a still life set up during class. I will spend time with each of you to further coach you as you work. 

Materials: • Same list as class-2 but add ultramarine, cobalt, or cerulean blue, 

Class-4. Drawing with paint, painting while drawing. We'll learn the most commonly used oil painting techniques and explore how to build structure in your work using a variety of painting techniques. I will spend time with each of you to further coach you as you work from a still life set up. 

Materials: • Same as Classes 1-3, add these colors - burnt sienna, yellow ochre Add one of these mediums - gamblin galkyd lite, or walnut oil, or liquin brand.
